Artful storytelling family portraits of your real life

STORYTELLING SESSIONS

Documentary family portraits: Photography of the magic of your everyday life

You know your children won’t be small forever.

You hold joy and grief side by side as you celebrate who your children are becoming and mourn the versions of them you are losing.

You know the feeling — when your child grows out of their insatiable love of making homes for fairies, or wearing their plastic firefighter hat to the grocery store, or the adorable way they say “yellow”. And, it feels like this tender version of them is gone.

I can help you hold onto this particular version of your child – and what it actually feels like to live inside this time with them.

This isn’t something picture day or your phone camera can capture.

Storytelling Sessions help you remember what life actually looks and feels like right now with your children — beautifully real, a little messy, full of love.

Storytelling Sessions help you remember what life actually looks and feels like right now with your children — beautifully real, a little messy, full of love.

One day your children will be grown.

And they’ll want to see a record of their real life — not of how everyone looked, but of how it felt to be loved by you, imperfectly and completely, in hundreds of ordinary moments, every day.

They deserve the version that’s not posed or polished. They deserve the version that’s true.

How they blaze with imagination, feast on wonder, and find beauty in the smallest of things.

How your home feels, full of soul and stories. The depth of your connection on a regular day when you are all simply being yourselves.

A record that, years from now, will make them cry because they’ll be able to feel how it felt to be seven again.

Your camera roll is full.

You photograph the milestones — the birthday cakes, the first days of school, the dance performances — the moments you’re supposed to record.

But the heart of your story lives in the ordinary moments. The ones that feel too small to photograph, and years from now will feel like everything.

Storytelling Sessions document the feeling of these everyday moments and the memories that you can feel in your body — the weight of a child asleep on your chest, the smell of their hair right after a bath, the sound of little feet running down the hall.

We don’t always know, in the moment, that we’re inside something we’ll ache to return to.

“The most meaningful part about having Melanie photograph our family was that it gave us a chance to slow down and celebrate the beauty of our everyday rituals and routines.”

THE EXPERIENCE

THE EXPERIENCE

When I arrive at your door, your kids may be shy to begin with (and honestly, so might you), but that quickly falls away when you focus on connecting with each other and realize there’s no pressure to perform.

I’ll be a warm, quiet presence in your family, noticing moments and finding beautiful light. You’ll get to slow down and enjoy time together.

Maybe you play dress up, have a kitchen dance party, or walk to your neighbourhood park. We can document a daily routine like dinner and bedtime so you can see the fleeting beauty in these long hours.

The session usually ends with a child’s “I don’t want you to leave.” More than once I’ve been asked back for play dates.

In less than a month you’ll be invited to view your photos.

There may be tears of joy.

You’ll get access to a print shop through your gallery where you can print your favourites for yourselves or for grandma, or make a book that will be sure to become your kids’ favourite bedtime story.

“Melanie was able to capture so many fleeting magic moments in the life of my 4 little grand daughters. Her photos made me keenly aware of what a special, loving & beautiful family we are and how fortunate we all are to have each other.”
